Five new species of Zingiber (Zingiberaceae) from Borneo

Abstract: Recent collections from Sabah and Sarawak have revealed a wide species diversity among the Bornean members of the genus Zingiber. Four previously unknown and one incompletely known species of the genus are presented. Z. vinosum is a lowland species characterized by its burgundy colour of the lower surface of the leaves. “…argenteum and Z. lambii (Theilade & Mood 1997). The dark burgundy colour of the back of the leaves has so far been described for 3 species of Zingiber namely Z. vinasum (Theilade & Mood 1997), Z. larsenii (Theilade 1999) and Z. recurvato (Tony 1987).. To find these two unusual features combined in Z. collinsii is remarkable indeed. The beautiful foliage and colourful inflorescences render Z. collinsii a great potential as an ornamental plant.…”

“…A key to 18 species including three widely cultivated species, which are not native to Borneo, and four incompletely known species was provided. Since then six species from Sabah and two from Sarawak, have been described (Theilade & Mood 1997a, b, Theilade & Christensen 1998. During field work in 1991 to 1995 several new species were collected in Sabah and Sarawak.…”
