Five-year survival does not equal cure in non–small cell lung cancer: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results–based analysis of variables affecting 10- to 18-year survival

Abstract: Five-year survivors of non-small cell lung cancer have a persistent risk of death from lung cancer up to 18 years from diagnosis. More than one half of all deaths in 5-year survivors are related to lung cancer. In multivariable regression analysis, age, node-negative disease, and lobar or greater resection were strong predictors of long-term survival (ie, 10-18 years).

“…Nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 85–90% of lung cancer cases with a 5-year survival rate of 15% (Siegel, Naishadham, & Jemal, 2012). Metastatic spread accounts for >70% of NSCLC deaths with the major sites of NSCLC metastasis being brain, bone, adrenal gland, and liver (Hubbard, Fu, Margevicius, Dowlati, & Linden, 2012; Murthy et al, 2010; Saintigny & Burger, 2012; Triano, Deshpande, & Gettinger, 2010). Numerous studies have established a strong correlation between CXCR4 expression and poor prognosis in NSCLC (Burger, Stewart, Wald, & Peled, 2011; Saintigny & Burger, 2012; Spano et al, 2004; Su et al, 2005; Wagner et al, 2009).…”

“…The anticipated implementation of nation-wide lung cancer screening programs will increase the proportion of patients diagnosed in early disease stages permitting such patients to undergo surgical resection, which is considered the best therapeutic approach 9. Nonetheless, the five years survival rates of these surgically treated patient, with or without the addition of adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy is approximately 50% 10, 11. Following primary tumor development the disease tends to progress along three distinct, yet often concomitantly occurring pathways: 1.…”

“…Each year, more than one million individuals die worldwide from lung cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and the 5-year survival rate is among the lowest of all cancers (Wu et al, 2011;Hubbard et al, 2012). A major challenge is the prevailing lack of specific biomarkers for detecting and monitoring lung cancer.…”
