Flame Retardancy Properties and Rheological Behavior of PP/DiDOPO Conjugated Flame Retardant Composites

Abstract: A bridged 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide derivative (DiDOPO) with conjugated structure was utilized as a novel conjugated flame retardant, Polypropylene(PP)/DiDOPO conjugated flame retardant composites were papered by being melt-extruding with a twin-screw extruder. The flame retardant efficiency of PP/DiDOPO conjugated flame retardant composites were investigated by cone calorimetry, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94). Besides, the rheological behavior of PP/DiDOPO … Show more

“…When the content of DiDOPO in conjugated structure was 16 wt %, the LOI value of polypropylene composites was 24%, reaching V-0 grade, and the composites might have low conductivity and charge mobility. In addition, according to the data provided in this paper, the FRI value at this time was 0.80 . Yang et al synthesized the multifunctional flame retardant EAD with a conjugated structure by an addition reaction of P–H of DOPO and the alkynyl group of 4-ethynylaniline (EA).…”

“…In addition, according to the data provided in this paper, the FRI value at this time was 0.80. 26 Yang et al synthesized the multifunctional flame retardant EAD with a conjugated structure by an addition reaction of P–H of DOPO and the alkynyl group of 4-ethynylaniline (EA). When 2 wt % EAD was added to the epoxy resin, the phosphorus loading was only 0.186 wt %, which could effectively improve the flame retardancy of the epoxy resin and LOI increased by 31% and UL-94 reached V-0 grade.…”

“…Phosphorus is an effective flame-retardant element, and phosphorus-based flame retardants can thermally decompose and release phosphorus-containing reactive radicals (e.g., PO2-, PO-, and HPO-, etc.) in the gas phase when used ( Zhang et al, 2022a ; Zhang et al, 2022b ). The average reactivity of these radicals is 10 times that of Cl- and 5 times that of Br-, which can effectively trap hydroxyl and hydrogen radicals, terminate the radical segment, and prevent further thermal decomposition of polyester materials.…”

“…In recent years, phosphorous-containing compounds have attracted wide attention for being halogen-free and having high efficiency in the fire protection of polymers, such as 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and its derivatives (Perez et al, 2006;Zhang et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2022a;Zhang et al, 2022b), hypophosphite (Ge et al, 2015), metal phosphinate (Zhao et al, 2013;He et al, 2020), etc., (Si et al, 2014). Among these flame retardants, the most important and efficient flame retardants are metal phosphinates, which can play their main role in gas phase by releasing PO•free radical scavenger and also catalyze the charring in the condensed phase.…”
