Flavimonas oryzihabitans Bacteremia: Clinical Features and Microbiological Characteristics of Isolates

Abstract: Flavimonas oryzihabitans is rarely reported as a pathogen in humans. Twelve cases of F. oryzihabitans bacteremia were diagnosed at National Taiwan University Hospital over a 3-year period. The clinical features of these patients were analyzed, and antimicrobial susceptibilities and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns of the 12 isolates were studied. Among these 12 patients, eight (67%) had underlying neoplastic diseases and all acquired F. oryzihabitans bacteremia while hospitalized. The clinical … Show more

“…Both genera also contain species that are associated with disease in humans (Hatchette et al, 2000; Musher, 2001; Dutkiewicz et al, 2016). These include P. putida and P. oryzihabitans , which are generally considered opportunist pathogens (Yang et al, 1996), particularly P. oryzihabitans which has been linked to bacteremia, peritonitis, and pneumonia (Lin et al, 1997). …”

“…It was rarely implicated in septic conditions, such as bacteraemias [7][8][9], pneumonias [10], meningitides [11], soft tissue infections [12] and peritonitis [1][2][3][4], especially among immunocompromised hosts with implanted foreign materials, such as Hickman-catheters, Tenckhoff-catheters and joint prosthesis [13][14][15]. Both nosocomial and community-acquired type of infections have been reported, the latter showing an increasing tedency in recent years [10,12,[14][15][16]. In our case report the most likely route of infection was the exogenous-transluminal one, as both the exit site and the subcutaneous tunnel were lacking any signs of inflammation, and there was no evidence of any abdominal pathology to suggest leak of pathogens from the bladder or the intestine.…”
