Flavonoid-attracted Aeromonas sp. from the Arabidopsis root microbiome enhances plant dehydration resistance

Abstract: Flavonoids are stress-inducible metabolites important for plant-microbe interactions. In contrast to their well-known function in initiating rhizobia nodulation in legumes, little is known about whether and how flavonoids may contribute to plant stress resistance through affecting non-nodulating bacteria. Here we show that flavonoids broadly contribute to the diversity of the Arabidopsis root microbiome and preferentially attract Aeromonadaceae, which included a cultivable Aeromonas sp. H1 that displayed flavo… Show more

“…Recently, the bacterium Aeromonas sp. H1 was reported to enhance the dehydration resistance of Arabidopsis via specific flavonoid accumulation [100]. Also, the presence of Steotrophomonas maltophilia enhanced the total flavonoid content in peanut (Arachis hypogea), in this case, under nitrogen-limiting conditions [101].…”

“…The composition of the rhizospheric bacterial community is affected by changes in environmental factors such as soil humidity, soil pH, and organic compounds content, which differ across soil types ( Cao et al, 2018 ; Lei et al, 2021 ; Khmelevtsova et al, 2022 ). In addition, the rhizospheric bacterial community is also affected by plant genotypes ( Jamalzadeh et al, 2021 ; Kaushal et al, 2021 ; He et al, 2022 ), implying a degree of host selectivity on the establishment of these communities.…”

“…Naringenin-mediated chemotaxis of Aeromonas sp. H1 toward Arabidopsis roots, marked also by the over-expression of genes for flagellar biosynthesis, was essential to protect plants from the deleterious effect of drought stress [185]. Similarly, phloretin and apigenin enhanced Pseudomonas fluorescens 2P24 growth and swarming motility in vitro [37].…”
