Flexible Earthwork BIM Module Framework for Road Project

Abstract: Development and expansion in the cities have increased the demand for road construction projects in different regions of the world. The construction projects in the modern era require the utilization of latest technology. BIM and its collaboration with other technologies like GPS, UAV, AR/VR, and telematics have successfully proven their worth in provision of a solution to various construction industry problems. Innovations in BIM process by researchers are a remarkable asset for planning and visualization. Ea… Show more

“…Thus, in each phase the complete risk assessment is carried out according to the INSST guide [ 75 ] in compliance with regulations [ 5 ]. This intimately connects safety with the work plan, allowing to know in each phase the level of risk and the measures to be applied, even allowing to decide, from the point of view of health and safety, which is the phase in which it is more appropriate to remove the line, as proposed by Raza et al [ 49 ]. In fact, in the event that once the risk has been assessed, the preventive measures have been implemented in the model and the risks have been reassessed, the risk remains intolerable, a possible solution would be to carry out a new 4D of the project ( Figure 1 F).…”

“…In the design phase of a road, BIM assists in the evaluation of design criteria and design quality, planning, cost estimation, as well as finding and resolving interferences with affected services [ 48 ]. In the earthworks phase, Raza et al [ 49 ] analyze the connection of the 3D model with the site planning (4D) interference construction phase with OPL. This 3D analysis capability is investigated by Bae et al [ 50 ] to optimize road pavement repairs with centimeter accuracy.…”

“…In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology, highway infrastructure has experienced from low-grade highway to highway, and then to digital, intelligent highway evolution. The iterative development of big data, Internet of things, cloud computing and artificial intelligence will lead to BIM + GIS technology having greater application value in the field of highway engineering [5][6] . Among them, BIM technology is mainly used to analyze and manage the internal information of infrastructure, and GIS technology is mainly aimed at the regional external space.…”

“…An experimental evaluation of the UAV for terrain modeling was performed and the UAV was considered as a cost-effective and time-saving solution [21]. It has been formulated by researchers that UAV performance is better than other techniques in terms of its accurate DEM generation that will help to calculate earth volumes [5,8,9]. However, the earthwork process also includes hauling distance to move these volumes and pathways for the movement of the equipment.…”

“…It is still true that the traditional GNSS surveying or total station methods can detect errors in earthwork design; however, what is different from the traditional approach is that UAVs have the capability of creating a site map on the fly and increase the efficiency of the design review process. As addressed in previous studies, further research that can exploit the result of UAV-based point cloud should be proposed, and considering the practical goal of the earthwork is cost-saving, and considering that the most of cost in earthwork is for equipment such as excavator, dump truck, and so on, with the help of UAV [8].…”
