To improve the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, a new ferrocement composite material was proposed. A polyvinyl alcohol fiberreinforced ferrocement cementitious composite (PVA-RFCC) and steel wire mesh (SWM) were attached onto the soffit of the RC beams as a composite reinforcement layer (CRL). One control beam and four strengthened RC beams were investigated. The maximum load carrying capacity, initial stiffness, and displacement ductility parameter of the strengthened beams were up to 99.3%, 48.0%, and 90.9% higher than those of the control beam, respectively. The SWM2 accounted for 91.6% of these improvements. An analytical model was proposed to predict the flexural capacity of strengthened RC beams. The tensile force of the polyvinyl alcohol-engineered cementitious composite was considered and calculated by rectangular and triangular distributions. The predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental results, which validated the accuracy of the proposed model.

Ferrocement is composed of cement mortar reinforced with small diameter closely spaced steel wire mesh to form a thin section conforming high performance of serviceability. The present study investigates the performance of ferrocement panels focused on the mechanical properties, water absorption and durability. A series of specimens were cast with single and double mesh layers. Flexural performance was carried out following sixty days in temperature cycle and in corrosion cell. These results was compared with the controlled sample. The test results shows that the flexural strength performance was reduced by 52% and 35% for single and double layer wire mesh samples respectively followed by corrosion environment. First crack load also changed after completion of sixty temperature cycles. This load is 27.3%, 42.3% and 31.8% of failure load for controlled sample, sample in room air after every temperature cycle and samples in room air following quenching after every temperature cycle respectively for single mesh layer sample, and for double mesh layer sample these values are 38.9%, 30.1% and 17.7%. Early first crack is found for the samples following quenching and cooled in room air; however, both types of samples are in low absorption level. This data represents that double layer mesh specimen exhibits better when compared to single layer mesh specimen in strength and corrosion parameters.

Ferrocement panels, while offering various benefits, do not cover instances of low and moderated velocity impact. To address this problem and to enhance the impact strength against low-velocity impact, a fibrous ferrocement panel is proposed and investigated. This study aims to assess the flexural and low-velocity impact response of simply supported ferrocement panels reinforced with expanded wire mesh (EWM) and steel fibers. The experimental program covered 12 different ferrocement panel prototypes and was tested against a three-point flexural load and falling mass impact test. The ferrocement panel system comprises mortar reinforced with 1% and 2% dosage of steel fibers and an EWM arranged in 1, 2, and 3 layers. For mortar preparation, a water-cement (w/c) ratio of 0.4 was maintained and all panels were cured in water for 28 days. The primary endpoints of the investigation are first crack and ultimate load capacity, deflection corresponding to first crack and ultimate load, ductility index, flexural strength, crack width at ultimate load, a number of impacts needed to induce crack commencement and failure, ductility ratio, and failure mode. The finding revealed that the three-layers of EWM inclusion and steel fibers resulted in an additional impact resistance improvement at cracking and failure stages of ferrocement panels. With superior ultimate load capacity, flexural strength, crack resistance, impact resistance, and ductile response, as witnessed in the experiment program, ferrocement panel can be a positive choice for many construction applications subjected to repeated low-velocity impacts.
