Floating bioplato for purification of waste quarry waters from mineral nitrogen compounds in the Arctic

Abstract: A bioplato was organized at Kirovogorskiy pond-settling of OLKON Company (the city of Olenegorsk, in Murmansk region) to reduce the content of nitrogen mineral compounds in water which come into the pond with the quarry waters after blasting operations using nitrogen compounds. The assortment of aboriginal plants was selected, a method of fixing and growing them on the water surface was developed, and observations of their vegetation were carried out. The dynamics of nitrogen compounds was determined in the la… Show more

“…The average nitrogen absorption rate by plants is highly variable, which is reported in the range of between 4% and 90%. Since direct uptake cannot exceed beyond a certain limit, further nitrogen removal is aided by microbial biofilm developed on the root surface through biological nitrification–denitrification processes . Ammonia is oxidized to NnormalO3 through NnormalO2by nitrifying bacteria in aerobic conditions, and NnormalO3 is restored to molecular nitrogen by denitrifying bacteria.…”

“…3. The comparative sorption capacity of the bio-plateau without options (1) (2) additional aeration, C 0 (Cd) = 1 mg/l the pH range used) slightly inhibited the absorption of Cd(II) ions, in contrast to the acidic environment, for which a significant reduction in purification and transpiration levels was observed.…”

“…On this basis, a new type of surface water purification was developed, based on the use of ecosystem mechanisms, which was called "bio-plateau" in Ukraine, "botanical sites" in Germany, "reed bed" in Great Britain, etc. In the world scientific literature, the most common name for water treatment plants of this type is the term "Constructed Wetlands" or "Artificial Wetlands" [1,6,16,13].…”
