Flocculation of montmorillonite by some hydrophobically modified polycations containing quaternary ammonium salt groups in the backbone

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The flocculating efficiency of some hydrophilic/hydrophobic cationic polyelectrolytes on montmorillonite suspension in water was investigated as a function of both the polycation structure and the flocculation parameters: polycation/montmorillonite contact time, suspension pH, polycation dose, and temperature. Cationic polyelectrolytes with quaternary ammonium salt groups in the backbone and hydrophobic side chains (hexyloxypropyl, PCA 5 H 1 and PCA 5 H 2 ; and decyloxypropyl, PCA 5 D 1 , respectively… Show more

“…These associations can be further reinforced by the addition of electrolyte, and can be reversibly destroyed/reformed when correspondingly increasing or decreasing shear rate . Owing to these unique properties, HAPAM polymers have been applied in various stages of oilfield industry, including tertiary oil recovery, drilling fluids, oilwell stimulation, to name but a few.…”

“…In the past few decades, researchers have found hydrophobically modified polymers showed excellent properties in the oily wastewater treatment in oil recovery operations and were effective in cleaning up organic contaminants in wastewater. These polymers include hydrophobically associating polyacrylate [5,6], vinyl trimethyloxysilane (VTMS) modified PDADMAC [7], hydrophobically modified chitosan [8], hydrophobically modified polycations [9], etc. By introducing hydrophobic group into polymer molecular structure, flocculation performance of the polymer is improved.…”

“…The permanent fungicidal and bactericidal properties of polysiloxanes bearing pendant quaternary ammonium salt groups have been reported by Dragan and coworkers 14–16. Quaternary ammonium compounds belong to the class of cationic disinfectants and have been widely used for half a century.…”
