Flood Mapping in a Complex Environment Using Bistatic TanDEM-X/TerraSAR-X InSAR Coherence

Abstract: In this paper, we assess the flood mapping capabilities of the X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery acquired by the bistatic pair TanDEM-X/TerraSAR-X (TDX/TSX). The main objective is to investigate the added value of the bistatic TDX/TSX Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) coherence in addition to the SAR backscatter in the context of inundation mapping. As a classifier, we consider a Random Forest (RF) classification scheme using TDX/TSX SAR intensities and their bistatic InSAR coherence… Show more

“…Using Sentinel-2 optical imagery, a fast and automatic data-driven thresholding method for inundation mapping was proposed by Kordelas et al [5] in order to better distinguish between different types of flooded wetlands. Chaabani et al [6] investigated the added value of the bistatic TDX/TSX Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) coherence and SAR backscatter in the context of inundation mapping in complex environments and compared that to the dynamics of a LISFLOOD-FP flood model simulation.…”

“…The Interferometric SAR (InSAR) coherence, ρ, provided by Very High-Resolution (VHR) SAR data, has been used to reduce under detection in urban areas [21,22]. Also, the bistatic InSAR coherence, from TanDEM-X, has shown some potentiality for more accurate floodwater mapping in a complex landscape with urban and vegetation areas [28]. The high sensitivity of ρ to surface changes is well-documented and enables the detection of damages caused by catastrophic events such as volcano eruptions, earthquakes, and floods [29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…The high sensitivity of ρ to surface changes is well-documented and enables the detection of damages caused by catastrophic events such as volcano eruptions, earthquakes, and floods [29][30][31][32][33]. While the usefulness of ρ for detecting water on bare soils has been demonstrated in several studies [33,34], first results of a successful exploitation of this feature, derived from VHR SAR data for detecting water in urban areas, have only recently been reported [21,22,28].…”

“…This evaluates the quality of local interferometric fringes and provides scattering information for ground objects. The generation of coherence map is much easier comparing to InSAR results, thus, this metric has been proved to be efficient as well as versatile and can be applied to many fields including water body recognition [22][23][24][25], disaster monitoring and relief [26][27][28][29], forest biomass extraction [30][31][32][33], target detection, and archeological protection [21,[34][35][36][37]. As for mining applications, [38] used coherence maps to identify underground mining-induced surface collapse.…”
