Flood risk management in Allala River (Algeria) using Flood frequency analysis and hydraulic modeling

Abstract: The objective of flood frequency analysis (FFA) is to associate flood intensity with a probability of exceedance and for making probabilistic estimates of a future flood event in Allala basin based on the historical discharge record at Sidi Akkacha gauging station, the peak floods discharge of Allala river for 5, 10, 50, 100 years return period are estimated using exponential distribution and the stage at different position of river are calculated using HEC RAS model . Based on the modeling study carried out c… Show more

“…Flood frequency analysis is used to relate the magnitude of floods to their frequency of occurrence using probability distribution methods. At present, there is no universally accepted frequency distribution model for frequency analysis of extreme floods, rather a whole group of models is considered (Izinyon and Ajumuka, 2013; Seckin et al , 2010; Ganamala and Kumar, 2017; Bhat et al , 2019; Issam et al , 2019).…”

“…Daily stream flow data from 1990 to 2009 was collected from the Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Energy and was used to estimate flood frequency analysis (Getahun and Gebre 2015;Bhagat 2017). The discharge at the Baro-Gambella gauging station was computed for 25-, 50-, and 100year return periods (Issam et al 2019). The three flood frequency distributions used were selected to compute the discharges from various return periods and to calculate probability estimates for the likelihood of extreme events (Gumbel distribution, Normal distribution, and Log Pearson Type III distribution).…”

“…Natural factors determine the hydrological conditions for the formation of floods on rivers, on which the regime of water levels depends. The most significant influence of hydrology is expressed on small rivers with reduced capacity [1]. The characteristic elements of geomorphology and relief form zones of waterlogging and flooding along river banks, distorting the natural coastline of streams.…”

“…Natural and anthropogenic factors, acting on the agrolandscapes of the steppe river basins, accelerate the processes of soil erosion, which leads to an intense washoff of fine earth into river beds and baulks [12]. As a result, degradation of watercourses occurs, which causes change in the natural coastline, occurrence of emergency situations associated with floods [1,13]. It is necessary to restore water bodies from degradation.…”
