Floodwater Metal Contaminants in an Australian Dryland River: A Baseline for Assessing Change Downstream of a Major Lead-Zinc-Silver and Copper Mine

Abstract: The variations in the quality of floodwaters from the upper Leichhardt River catchment (1113 km), Mount Isa, in northwest Queensland, Australia, were examined to better understand the impact of urban, mining, and industrial activity on receiving waters. Water sampling was conducted during the 2006-2007 wet season and captured during rainfall and runoff events. Samples were analyzed for total and dissolved (0.45-μm filter) metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) and water quality indicators (pH, electrical conductivity, an… Show more

“…Groundwater quality will also deteriorate due to contaminate flood water which contains heavy metals. According to the studies carried out by Tawari-Fufeyin, Paul, and Godleads, (2015); Mackay and Taylor, (2013); Pardue et al (2005) on flood water quality assessment study show that most of the flood water were contaminated with heavy metals such as chromium, copper and zinc. This situation will expose flood victims vulnerable to water pollution with high concentration of toxic contaminants.…”

“…[7][8][9] Mine run-off is also associated with contamination of the environment with Pb and other metals. 10 Birds exposed to high concentrations of Pb will develop clinical symptoms quickly, with the majority of deaths linked to direct consumption of spent Pb shot through bullet fragments embedded in food items. 6 This paper reports a case of lead poisoning in three domestic free-range chickens found in one of the affected…”

“…In addition, iron packaging materials and iron products can also form waste ferric ion. These ferric ions cause water and soil pollution; in particular, the large amount of ferric ion in water causes severe water pollution and brings great harm to aquatic organisms [2, 4, 5]. The toxic effects of heavy metals on aquatic animals such as prawn and grouper have been studied intensively, and the results showed that heavy metal pollution may be further enriched between organisms through food chains [610], which in turn may threaten the survival of human.…”
