Floodwater utilisation values of wetland services – a case study in Northeastern China

Abstract: Abstract. Water plays a significant role in wetlands. Floodwater utilisation in wetlands brings a wide range of wetland services, from goods production and water regulation to animal protection and aesthetics related to water supply in wetlands. In this study, the floodwater utilisation values of wetland services were estimated within the Momoge wetland and Xianghai wetland in western Jilin province of northeastern China. From 2003 to 2008, the floodwater diverted from the Nenjiang and Tao'er River is 381 mill… Show more

“…For storm floods, most studies focused on flood disasters and forecast [13,14], flood risk and efficiency [15,16], and floodwater utilization [17,18], which has been extended such that rain-flood can be one of the main recharge sources for groundwater in some regions [19,20]. Despite the disaster of floods, under positive circumstances, flood water can be used to constitute a considerable amount of a region's water resources [21], especially in a groundwater system.…”

“…Naturally, flood mitigation is a highprofile ES (Barth, N.-C. and Döll, P. 2016;Opperman, J.J. et al 2017). Permeable floodplain deposits allow floodwater storage and the ability to mitigate floods (Lü, S.B. et al 2012).…”

“…In the context of frequent floods and droughts, the flood water resource utilization is an important measure to ensure water resource security in China. Most studies focused on flood disasters and forecast [2,3], flood risk and efficiency [4,5], and floodwater utilization and its assessment [6,7]. The guidelines of water resources governance had turned from "flood control" to "flood management".…”
