Monosulcate pollen grains are an important component of the Mesozoic palynofloras around the world. These type of grains are produced by several groups of plants and because of the morphological similarities among them, their taxonomic determination is difficult. Currently, there is scarce information about morphological differences of monosulcate pollen grains and this makes their botanical affinity in fossil specimens challenging. In this work, we analyzed statistically the morphological features of monosulcate fossil pollen grains recovered from six palynological assemblages from the Lower Cretaceous Lagarcito Formation of central-western Argentina. We used our own fossil dataset and data from the description of monosulcate pollen grains published from Cretaceous cycadalean in situ male cones from Patagonia. Furthermore, morphological variables from selected living species were added to support the analysis. According to our results, two main groups with clear morphological features were characterized among fossils. The use of an extant dataset allowed us to support the exine sculpture as an important variable when characterizing fossil pollen grains. Finally, our fossil dataset showed similarities with the in-situ pollen grains from the cycadalean cone species Androstrobus munku and Androstrobus patagonicus. This work is the first attempt to identify different morphological types among fossil monosulcate pollen grains recovered from the Lagarcito Formation of central-western Argentina. Our results will contribute to elucidate morphological variations in fossil pollen grains and may improve future taxonomic studies.

The changing climate during the Cenozoic affected the diversity of plants in Patagonia, as species richness tends to increase during warm periods and decrease during cold periods. Precipitation is a significant factor shaping diversity, as shown in the case of central Chile during the Miocene. This study presents a reconstruction of the climate and vegetation in Tierra del Fuego Island, located approximately 52°S, using fossil flora recovered from the Filaret Formation to understand the Miocene epoch, characterized by contrasting global climatic changes. Filaret flora comprises twenty‐seven morpho‐taxa, including nine Nothofagus species and other Gondwanan and Neotropical families, such as Atherospermataceae and Anacardiaceae, in agreement with a forest habitat. Leaf physiognomy climate reconstruction suggests microthermal conditions, with a mean annual temperature of 9.4–11°C and annual precipitation ranging from 985 to 1,130 mm. These conditions are warmer and wetter than the modern record of the area, with a MAT of 6°C and mean annual precipitation of 300 mm. As the Filaret fossil record suggests, the forest habitat under a microthermal climate is consistent with the global climatic reconstruction of the Early Miocene. This Miocene landscape on Tierra del Fuego was possible because the Andes could not rain‐shadow humid westerly winds by this timeframe.

Sobral fue el Jefe de la comisión que exploró y desarrolló dos pozos petroleros en el Ñirihuau desde fin de 1932 a mediados de 1934. Durante ese lapso reconoció la estructura de la comarca del cerro La Buitrera, realizando también observaciones menores entre Ingeniero Jacobacci y Pilcaniyeu, la zona del río Foyel y los alrededores de Bariloche, además de colaborar en la descripción de las perforaciones Ñirihuau 1 y 2. El detalle de sus interpretaciones sobre la geología de la zona permaneció inédito en sus libretas de campo. Se comentan las notas y dibujos insertos en ellas y reproducen parcialmente, poniendo de relieve su valor histórico y geológico.
