Fluorescent Sensing of Chlorophenols in Water Using an Azo Dye Modified β-Cyclodextrin Polymer

Abstract: A water soluble azo dye modified β-cyclodextrin polymer 4 was synthesized and used as a chemosensor for the detection of chlorinated phenols, model chlorinated by-products (CBPs) of water treatment for drinking purposes. The characterization of the intermediates and the azo dye modified β-CD polymer was done by UV/Vis Spectrophotometry, FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopies. The chlorophenols were capable of quenching the fluorescence of the polymer. The polymer showed greater sensitivity towards 2,4-dichlorophenol,… Show more

“…Indeed, chlorinated by-products (CBPs) are formed in water as a result of the reaction of chlorine and its derivatives, used in the disinfection of water, with natural organic matter (NOM). So the sensitive detection of such pollutants is of great interest, especially in drinking water [113]. The sensor was synthesized as seen on Figure 23 In terms of applications, azo-modified cyclodextrins can act as sensor or binder for organic molecules [110][111][112].…”

“…b-cyclodextrins (b-CDs) are well-known molecular hosts capable of including hydrophobic molecules inside the cavities, the selective association of organic molecules into the hydrophobic cavities of cyclodextrin had been used to develop different separation matrices [1] and sensors [2][3][4]. Nowadays, b-CD was commonly hydride with p-conjugated polymers, peptides, DNA, nanocarbons and nanoparticles [5].…”

“…It is a field of ever interest for a synthetic chemist to explore the color chemistry. Because of exciting opportunities and advancement of these dyes in the field of sensors to promote the electro‐catalytic activity,, photo material in optical storage applications,, as diagnosis probes in medical applications and electronic devices . Azo dyes also find applications in the field of dye sensitized electrodes for water splitting reaction, coloring the textile fibers and as important intermediates in organic synthesis .…”
