Fluroxypyr-resistant kochia [Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott] confirmed in Alberta

Abstract: Recent confirmation of dicamba-resistant kochia [Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott] in Alberta warrants investigation of resistance to other commonly used synthetic auxin herbicides like fluroxypyr. A randomized-stratified survey of 305 sites in Alberta was conducted in 2017 to determine the status of fluroxypyr-resistant kochia. Overall, 13% of the kochia populations were fluroxypyr-resistant. Only 4% of the populations were both fluroxypyr- and dicamba-resistant, indicating that different me… Show more

“…RockyView18 was collected from a wheat field in Rocky View County in 2018 following a farmer report of suspected fluroxypyr resistance. Vulcan17 was collected from a field in Vulcan County during a 2017 survey of herbicide-resistant kochia in Alberta [9,10]. Lethbridge18(S) was a glyphosate-and synthetic auxin-susceptible but ALS inhibitor-resistant control population that was selected and maintained through recurrent population-level increases in the field in Lethbridge County.…”

“…Lethbridge18(S) was a glyphosate-and synthetic auxin-susceptible but ALS inhibitor-resistant control population that was selected and maintained through recurrent population-level increases in the field in Lethbridge County. In each field, reproductive biomass was sampled from 10-20 mature plants and combined to create a composite sample representing the kochia population [10][11][12]. The samples were dried at room temperature and threshed by hand under isolated conditions to prevent cross contamination of the kochia seed accessions.…”

“…Plants 2021, 10, 1961 2 of 11 Kochia populations in Canada can exhibit resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors [Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC) Group 2], synthetic auxins (HRAC Group 4), and glyphosate (HRAC Group 9) [8][9][10][11]. Wild oat has been reported with resistance to acetyl-CoA carboxylase inhibitors (HRAC Group 1), ALS inhibitors, very long chain fatty acid synthesis inhibitors (HRAC Group 15), and protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors (HRAC Group 14) [8].…”
