Folate deficiency and aberrant expression of cell adhesion molecule 1 are potential indicators of prognosis in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: The etiology of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) has not yet been adequately examined. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between serum folate deficiency and abnormal expression of the cell adhesion molecule 1 (CADM1) protein in the progression of LSCC. Samples were collected from 60 patients with LSCC and 30 healthy people. Radioimmunoassays and immunohistochemical staining were performed to measure serum folate levels and CADM1 protein expression, respectively. The resu… Show more

“…People who had received vitamin B12 in the previous six months, those with renal insufficiency, those with diseases that affect salivary homocysteine, including diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and osteoporosis, those with coronary artery disorders and venous thrombosis, and smokers were excluded from the study. 15,16 None of the patients were alcohol consumers.…”

“…Several studies have documented a significant correlation between the occurrence of HNSCC and decreased serum folate (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16), as well as increased serum Hcy levels (9,10,12,13,15,17,18). In a systematic review encompassing four studies, HNSCC patients exhibited significantly lower serum folate levels compared to controls (19).…”

“…In addition, CADM1 mRNA and protein expression is associated with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cases (Lu et al, 2012). Considering clinical prognosis, lower CADM1 expression is associated with severe laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (Chang et al, 2016). In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, the OS (overall survival) and PFS (progression-free survival) of the CADM1 positive group was higher than those of the negative group, and CADM1 could have a potential role in prognosis (Zeng et al, 2016).…”
