Folate Levels in Patients Hospitalized with Coronavirus Disease 2019

Abstract: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of decreased folate levels in patients hospitalized with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and evaluate their outcome and the prognostic signifi-cance associated with its different levels. In this retrospective cohort study, data were obtained from the electronic medical records at the Sheba Medical Center. Folic acid levels were available in 333 out of 1020 consecutive patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection hospitalized from January 2020 to November 2020. Thirty-ei… Show more

“…Our study indicates a positive correlation between B9 and IgG levels in female patients. Decreased folate value is highly prevalent in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection [ 67 ]. Zinc plays a crucial role in antibody production via the alterations of the function and number of various immune cells in inflammatory conditions [ 17 ].…”

“…39 Decreased levels of serum folate are common among inpatients with COVID-19. 40 Multiple strategies enable SARS-CoV-2 to evade the innate immunity; these include low cytosine-phosphateguanosine levels in the genome and suppression of IFN-α/β production at the earliest stage of infection. 41,42 According to a classic theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the lung and large intestine are "interior-exteriorly" related.…”
