“…INCI have been reported to a lesser extent as compared to nuclear grooves in most studies. 4,9,18 We identified INCI in 29 of 59 (49.15%) of our cases, similar to Fulciniti et al 9 and Jogai et al 20 Nuclear enlargement was a prominent finding in all our cases, and in a large proportion of the cases the nuclei were more oval than round. Like Mesonero et al, 6 we observed nuclear grooves more readily in the larger, oval nuclei as compared to the cells with small, round nuclei.…”

“…Many previous studies have stressed the importance of identifying microfollicular architecture in the diagnosis of FVPC. 6,9,17,18 However, our findings indicate that syncytial fragments may be a more common and consistent finding in FVPC than microfollicles. In the present study, the follicular pattern was absent from 11 cases, and by relying on this architectural pattern alone the diagnosis of FVPC would have been missed.…”

“…Others have studied other cytologic features that might help with the differential diagnosis of FVPTC and UTPTC. Perikala et al 8 suggested that the combination of numerous colloid balls and rosettelike microfollicles is frequently seen in FVPTC and help to differentiate it from other thyroid lesions. However, in our study, although colloid balls appeared in 8 cases (67%), they were not as numerous as Perikala et al described.…”

“…This may be due to different smear and staining techniques. Perikala et al 8 used 75% ethanol for fixation and Papanicolaou stain in half their cases and used air-dried samples and Wright-Giemsa stain in the other half. All our cases were air dried and stained with Riu's stain.…”
