Food composition database harmonization for between-country comparisons of nutrient data in the TEDDY Study

Abstract: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young Study (TEDDY) aims at examining the associations between islet autoimmunity and various environmental exposures, (e.g. diet) in Finland, Germany, Sweden and the United States (US). In order to produce comparable results from dietary assessments, the national food composition databases (FCDB) must contain mutually comparable food composition data. Systematic comparison (definition, unit of measurement, and method of analysis) of energy, protein, fats, carb… Show more

“…Due to these factors, the use of international tables in national studies on food consumption assessment must be done with caution [31]. Furthermore, there is a difference in terms of the nomenclature used since each country lists the foods using specific names according to the eating habits in their culture [32].…”

“…Furthermore, the choice of the USDA table for the analysis of food consumption data can lead to an overestimation of calorie intake in relation to the TACO table and an overestimation of fiber intake in relation to the Nutritional Support Table. The comparison between studies assessing dietary intake is important in nutritional epidemiology. Two major inter national studies -European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition [36] and The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young [32] -˜ were aimed to develop nutrient databases and compare food composition tables between countries. However, the lack of comparability between the food composition tables and databases was the main obstacle found in both studies [32,36].…”

“…In Germany, parents weighted food when keeping the records; the food portion booklet was only used in addition. The records were reviewed at all clinical visits and entered into country-specific databases to assess intake of various nutrients (22). Assessment of soluble fiber was possible only for data from Germany and the United States because the national food composition databases have been harmonized between countries only for those nutrients that were available from all the food databases and that had originally been hypothesized to be potentially associated with T1D.…”

“…As a next step, intake of soluble fiber was standardized to total energy intake by using the residual method (23). This standardization was done separately for each country, because there were slight differences in the analysis method, although the food databases from Germany and the United States both use content data analyzed by enzymatic methods for calculation of soluble fiber (22).…”
