Foodie Calls: When Women Date Men for a Free Meal (Rather Than a Relationship)

Abstract: A foodie call occurs when a person, despite a lack of romantic attraction to a suitor, chooses to go on a date to receive a free meal. The present study examines predictors of a deceptive form of the foodie call in the context of male–female dates: when a woman purposefully misrepresents her romantic interest in a man to dine at his expense. In two studies, we surveyed women regarding their foodie call behavior, dark triad personality traits, traditional gender role beliefs, and online dating history. We found… Show more

“…Some contemporary women engage in foodie calls, that is, going on a date in order to get a free meal. A study on foodie calls found that 33% of women had engaged in a foodie call, and some engaged in them frequently or very frequently (Collisson, Howell, & Harig, 2020). We are not aware of any studies on foodie calls in men, and suspect that few men would go on dates in hopes of a free meal.…”

“…Dark Triad traits were found to be positively correlated with various dimensions of short-term mating but not with longterm mating (Jonason et al, 2009). In a recent study, Collisson et al (2019) examined a rather peculiar behavior: the researchers wanted to know how frequently women engaged in foodie calls (i.e., how often they set up a date with someone for a free meal), and what personality traits were associated with an accepting attitude toward such dates. The results revealed that 23-33% of the female participants had at least once engaged in a foodie call.…”

“…Instead, it was the overall constellation of Dark Tetrad traits—or dark personality—that had the largest association with relationship interference. These data contribute to a growing literature emphasizing the shared variance in the Dark Tetrad (or, typically, Dark Triad) traits over the individual traits (e.g., Collisson et al, 2020; Johnason et al, 2019; Żemojtel-Piotrowska et al, 2020). This suggests that dark, antisocial, and disagreeable behaviors may not be driven by specific dark traits, but rather by possessing high levels of all of the traits.…”

“…Figure 1 shows our statistical model. Consistent with other work on dark personality and antisocial behavior (e.g., Collisson et al, 2020), we used a bifactor model to capture the Dark Tetrad. That is, we loaded each of the items in the Dark Tetrad onto their own individual constructs (sadism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) as well as onto a broader Dark Tetrad factor designed to capture the overall dark personality.…”
