Foraminifers in upper Viséan–lower Serpukhovian limestones (Mississippian) from South Wales: regional correlation and implications for British foraminiferal zonal schemes

Abstract: Foraminiferal assemblages have been recorded in sections from the Gower Peninsula and North Crop in South Wales, of Holkerian (Stormy Limestone Formation), late Asbian to early Brigantian (Oxwich Head Limestone Formation) and uppermost early to late Brigantian (Oystermouth Formation) age. The absence of lower Asbian foraminifers in the studied successions is confirmed. These formations and biostratigraphic boundaries are correlated with those in northern England, where similar foraminiferal assemblages are rec… Show more

“…At the base of the Cf6δ subzone are H. bradyana , Asteroarchaediscus and Claracrusta catenoides . The occurrence of Asteroarchaediscus in older levels in Ireland and Wales compared with sections in England has been discussed by Cózar & Somerville (2020), whereas the forms included here as Neoarchaediscus ? sp.…”

“…This observation is incorrect because there are numerous sections where these foraminifers occur in the Cf6γ subzone or even in the Cf6δ subzone (e.g. Gallagher & Somerville 1997; Cózar & Somerville 2004, 2005 a , 2020; Somerville & Cózar 2005; Gallagher et al . 2006).…”
