The aim of this study is to determine the electromagnetic field spatial distribution and longitudinal end effect characteristics of short primary linear induction motor (SPLIM) in the field of electromagnetic launch. First, in accordance to the electromagnetic model assumption of SPLIM and one‐dimensional electromagnetic field theory, the analytical expression of the whole‐region magnetic flux density of air‐gap is derived using electromagnetic field boundary conditions in line with the actual physical meaning. Second, the finite element method used in comparing the analytical calculation values of key physical quantities, such as air‐gap flux density and secondary eddy current in a multidimensional manner under various static and dynamic working conditions and verifying the correctness of the analytical calculation of the electromagnetic field. On this basis, the air‐gap flux density of SPLIM is decomposed according to the different generation mechanisms, and the spatial distribution of each part of the flux density is studied. Spatial Fourier analysis of flux density is conducted, the end effect coefficient is defined, and the change rule of the end effect coefficient with the design parameters of the motor is studied. Finally, a megawatt‐class high thrust prototype test platform was built, and the measured electromagnetic force was compared with the electromagnetic force calculated by air gap magnetic field and secondary eddy current. The steady‐state error of the two was less than 2%, which verified the accuracy of the analysis and calculation.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to calculate the normal force of a two degree of freedom direct drive induction motor considering coupling effects based on an analytical model. Compared with the traditional single degree of freedom motor, normal force characteristics of two-degree-of-freedom direct drive induction motor (2DOFDDIM) is affected by coupling effect when the machine is in a helical motion. To theoretically explain the influence mechanism of coupling effect, this paper conducts a quantitative analysis of the influence of coupling effect on normal force based on the established analytical model of normal force considering coupling effect. Design/methodology/approach Firstly, the normal forces generated by 2DOFDDIM in linear motion, rotary motion and helical motion are investigated and compared to prove the effect of the coupling effect on the normal force. During this study, several coupling factors are established to modify the calculation equations of the normal force. Then, based on the multilayer theoretical method and Maxwell stress method, a novel normal force calculation model of 2DOFDDIM is established taking the coupling effect into account, which can easily calculate the normal force of 2DOFDDIM under different motions conditions. Finally, the calculation results are verified by the results of 3D finite element model, which proves the correctness of the established calculating model. Findings The coupling effect produced by the helical motion of 2DOFDDIM affects the normal force. Originality/value In this paper, the analytical model of the normal force of 2DOFDDIM considering the coupling effect is established, which provides a fast calculation for the design of the motor.

This study mainly investigates the key secondary parameter effecting on transverse force and the changing trend of its components, which include the repulsive and restoring components. Firstly, considering the transverse displacements, skin effect and end effects, the full 3D finite element models of the single‐sided linear induction motor (SLIM) are built. Secondly, when the width of the secondary varies, the transverse force and its two components are presented and analysed. At the same time, the air‐gap flux densities and the eddy currents along the transverse directions are calculated. Then when the topological transform of aluminium plate (e.g. Al‐cap type) and back‐iron plate (e.g. laminated type) are applied, the transverse force and its components are given. Finally, the transverse force, thrust and efficiencies are compared in the SLIMs with different secondaries as well as some experiments are given. It is shown that the width of the secondary is the main factor influencing the transverse force.
