Forced Solid-State Interactions for the Selective “Turn-On” Fluorescence Sensing of Aluminum Ions in Water Using a Sensory Polymer Substrate

Abstract: Selective and sensitive solid sensory substrates for detecting Al(III) in pure water are reported. The material is a flexible polymer film that can be handled and exhibits gel behavior and membrane performance. The film features a chemically anchored salicylaldehyde benzoylhydrazone derivative as an aluminum ion fluorescence sensor. A novel procedure for measuring Al(III) at the ppb level using a single solution drop in 20 min was developed. In this procedure, a drop was allowed to enter the hydrophilic materi… Show more

“…The major exposure source of the Al 3+ in everyday life is from the usage of aluminum foil and containers, the risk of absorption of Al 3+ ions by the human body is growing [ 4 ]. However, aluminum is not necessary for the human body, and its excessive exposure to the human body has an adverse effect, such as Parkinson’s disease [ 5 ]. Furthermore, the iron binding protein has the ability to carry Al 3+ ions to the brain and damage the central nervous system [ 6 ].…”

“…The linearity range of the three CDs was studied between 4 and 100 μg L −1 . LOD was determined by calculating the sum of the parameters ā (average slope) and b (interception point) for three calibration curves: 31 where SD b is the standard deviation of the interception point. The LOQ was calculated as follows, …”

“…Once determined the colour of the fluorescent material, the next step is to study the fluorescence efficiency of compound (2) using quinine sulphate as fluorescence reference in acid media (0.05 M sulphuric acid) as we previously described. 26 The results show that compound (2) has a high quantum yield (Φ = 0.63), even greater than the used reference, quinine sulphate (Φ = 0.53). This characterization gives more information about other potential applications of materials…”
