Forensic Architecture

Abstract: The urban destruction captured by black and white photos of London after the Blitz or bomb‐damaged Berlin are emblematic of the desolation brought by modern warfare. Eyal Weizman, Paulo Tavares, Susan Schuppli and Situ Studio describe, though, how the built environment now represents more than a means of violation in conflict, as it has become an important source of evidence bearing witness to the event when international justice is sought. “…Aerial photographs have started to be used to monitor the shifting climatic zones and boundaries. In case of socio-political conflicts, aerial imaging witnessed a spatial change of the borders that demarcated climatic zones or state territories (Weizman and Sheikh, 2015). Recently, aerial photographs are used in critical media studies regarding landscapes of memory.…”

“…processing and presentation," that inscribe materials as authentic and give them validity to speak before the court. Drawing a parallel with COI materials, we argue that they are progressively "enriched" to carry weight within legal and public forums (also Weizman et al 2010). This leads us to focus on the knowledge production of COI units as processual and iterative, generated through the three phases of investigation, concordance, and consolidation.…”
