Forensic toxicological implication of acute fatal poisoning cases due to benfuracarb ingestion

Abstract: We describe here three cases involving acute fatalities due to benfuracarb ingestion and the forensic toxicological implications. Benfuracarb, a carbamate insecticide and its main metabolite carbofuran, were detected using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrophotometry (GC/MS) after extraction with ethyl acetate and then quantified using gas chromatography (GC) equipped with NPD. The blood levels of benfuracarb and carbofuran were in the range of 0.30-2.32 microg/ml and 1.45-1.47… Show more

“…Insecticide poisonings are nowadays mainly a problem in developing countries [6,7,8,9], whereas OP intoxication in highly developed countries generally is less often due to suicidal attempts [10] and seem to be quite uncommon [3,8,11,12,13,14,15]. On the contrary, poisoning with pesticides like paraquat or diquat are described more often [16].…”

“…Carbofuran is found to be more persistent and toxic (Iesce et al 2006). It was estimated that death was induced by the combined toxicity of benfuracarb itself and its metabolite carbofuran (Lee et al 1999).…”

“…Rare fatal cases due to pesticide have been recently reported (Kenneth et al 1992;Picotte and Perreault 1991;West et al 1997;Kintz et al 1997). Because benfuracarb is widely used and has a high toxicity, there is the possibility of fatal poisoning due to accidental ingestion or for suicidal or homicidal purposes (Lee et al 1999). For the toxicological evaluation of benfuracarb poisoning, benfuracarb and carbofuran must be quantified simultaneously in biological materials because the toxicity of carbofuran (oral LD50 value in rats; 8 mg/kg) is 17 times higher than benfuracarb (oral LD50 value in rats; 138 mg/kg) (Tomlin 1997).…”

“…4). Für den Nachweis von Carbofuran in Nieren, Muskelgewebe und Blut kam zuerst eine rein qualitative Methode zur Anwendung, wobei der Wirkstoff mittels gaschromatographischer Auftrennung gekoppelt an Massenspektrometrie identifiziert wurde (Lee et al, 1999;Ameno et al, 2001). Neben dem Carbofuran wurde dabei auch ein Metabolit sichtbar, der durch «Verseifung», das heisst Hydrolyse der Seitenkette entsteht.…”
