The world’s population has increased exponentially in recent decades, and the rising demand for resources presents crucial challenges that need to be addressed to ensure humanity’s current pace of development without compromising the means of future generations. The purpose of the present study is to quantify the first- and second-order cause-effect degree of incidence that drives consumer behavior when selecting a sustainable product based on the opinions of academic experts in the field. The forgotten effects theory is employed for the treatment of information. The main advantage of this methodology is the combination of expert opinions with a robust mathematical procedure that allows obtaining not only the direct but also the indirect or hidden degree of incidence. The selected experts are academic leaders in the field of sustainability in Mexico. The results show a high direct incidence of variables such as education, income and culture and a strong indirect incidence of sustainable knowledge, environmental awareness and recommendations. The present study attempts to shed light on quantifying the direct and indirect elements that encourage consumers’ choice of sustainable food products and to understand the in-depth reasons for the discrepancy between the will and actions of consumers.

Los fenómenos en la naturaleza forman parte de un sistema o un subsistema (Gil-Lafuente et al., 2020). La compleja interacción entre los elementos integrantes de estos sistemas provoca interdependencias de causalidad. Estas relaciones de causas y efectos, tanto directas como indirectas (ocultas), afectan, entre otros puntos, la toma acertada de decisiones (Gil-Lafuente & Barcellos, 2010; Alfaro-Calderón, 2018; Ruiz & Zubillaga, 2002; Arandes et al., 2017; Rodríguez et al., 2008). En las ciencias sociales destaca la propuesta de Kaufmann y Gil Aluja (1988) denominada la teoría de los efectos olvidados (TEO). Esta robusta propuesta combina elementos derivados de la lógica difusa, desarrollada en los años sesenta por el profesor Lofti Zadeh y principalmente discutida en Fuzzy Sets (Zadeh, 1965). La TEO permite obtener todas las relaciones directas e indirectas de los fenómenos analizados. Esta teoría es un enfoque innovador y eficiente que considera todas las relaciones en los fenómenos, minimizando los errores que pueden ocurrir en la modelización (Gil-Lafuente et al., 2015; Gil-Lafuente & Luis-Bassa, 2011). En la cuantificación de las relaciones de causalidad existentes que actúan en red es necesario identificar el término incidencia. Este es considerado como el efecto de un conjunto de elementos sobre otros elementos o sobre sí mismo. Las relaciones de causalidad se clasifican en primer orden, es decir, que se dan de un conjunto A a un conjunto B. Las incidencias de segundo orden suceden de un conjunto A sobre un conjunto B y, a su vez, del conjunto B sobre un conjunto C.

The magic towns of Mexico require strategies that help them to face competition and influence the economic development of the country and the tourism sector itself. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the relationship between tourism competitiveness and tourism GDP in the magic towns, in order to identify direct and indirect effects of the phenomenon from the perspective of experts. To respond to this approach made, the theory of forgotten effects proposed by Kaufmann & Aluja in 1988 was used. In order to apply the forgotten effects, 25 experts from different countries and knowledgeable about the “Pueblos Mágicos” programme evaluated the cause-effect relationships. A close relationship was observed between natural and cultural resources and stock market, exchange and investment activities. A strong relationship was also found between accessibility to the destination, tourism infrastructure and complementary tourism services with photography and videography services. Finally, a relationship was found between natural resources and retail trade. These relationships suggest that investment in natural and cultural resources, improved accessibility, tourism infrastructure and the promotion of complementary tourism services can have a positive impact on the local economy. Prior to the present work, an evaluation between the two aforementioned variables (tourism competitiveness and tourism GDP) in Magic Towns had not been performed. With the results obtained, the cause-effect relationships of the phenomenon under study were made visible, both direct and indirect relationships, thus being able to obtain a complete picture and in fact, facilitate both decision-making and the generation of strategies that seek to improve these tourist destinations.
