Formate-Based Reservoir Drilling Fluid Resolves High-Temperature Challenges in the Natuna Sea

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractSelecting the components of fluids for reservoir drilling and completion can require extensive laboratory work to determine the most compatible fluid. Well temperatures in excess of 300°F (150°C) create additional challenges, as the additives required to give water-based reservoir drilling fluids the rheological and fluid-loss characteristics needed to successfully drill and complete long horizontal wells degrade at such elevated temperatures. In addition, su… Show more

“…• Sized CaCO 3 for density and fluid loss control Selection and optimization of the DIF formulation for the Gabus Massive, openhole producers has been discussed in earlier publications. 5,6 Laboratory Evaluation/Optimization of EDTA Cleanup Treatment Development and field trial of the EDTA Cleanup system has been described in an earlier publication. 4 The basic components of the EDTA cleanup treatment are ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (H 4 EDTA), potassium hydroxide (KOH), starch-specific enzyme, and ascorbic acid with a final pH of 6.0 to 6.5.…”

“…Despite the screening protection of the structure, degradation always takes place with thermal aging [ 7 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Degradation of the ordered xanthan heavily influences its rheological behavior, turning its gel-like properties to liquid, and consequently, there is the challenge of extending the performance window for engineering oilfield applications [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”
