Formation of Silver Nanoparticles from a N-Hexadecylethylenediamine Silver Nitrate Complex

Abstract: We report the capability for forming silver nanoparticles from a single source of N-hexadecylethylenediamine silver nitrate complex that acts as both a metal ion provider and a particle protector. The formation of the metal−ligand complex and nanocomposite is evident from the similarity of a Fourier transform infrared spectrum of free N-hexadecylethylenediamine to those of the complex and the composite. The formation and size of particles have been determined from the UV−vis plasmon absorption spectroscopic an… Show more

“…Silver is part of virtually every SAXS experiment because Ag-behenate is used for q calibration [96]. The heavier elements, such as Ag, are easy to observe with SAXS because of their high electron contrast, and a number of studies describe size and structure of AgNP-based materials [97]. Anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering uses an X-ray source tuned to just below the absorption energy of the element of interest and thus helps to obtain element-specific information.…”

“…(Manna et al, 2001;Iida et al, 2004) These surfactants are structurally similar to gemini-type surfactants which have been extensively studied and showed a variety of aggregation phenomena due to multi-alkyl chains and bulky headgroup. (Zana & Xia, 2003) As the metallosurfactants have additional properties due to containing transition metals, multi-chained metallosurfactants are oriented to a wide range of potential applications such as metallomesogens, optoelectronic devices, magnetic resonance imaging, homogeneous catalysis, and nanoparticles.…”

“…Metal NPs are usually prepared by reduction of metal ions in solution. Meanwhile, because of the trouble-some aggregation of NPs induced by their high surface energy, surface passivating reagent and capping reagent are usually involved in the reaction system (Manna et al 2001;He et al 2001). The choice of the capping agent is very critical because it determines the stability, solubility, reactivity and even the size and shape of the NPs during the synthesis.…”
