Dental and oral health is an important part of physical health that requires our attention. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is known as a cariogenic microorganism because it breaks down sugar and forms tooth substances for energy production. One of the preventive measures against the occurrence of chemical dental plaque is the use of mouthwash. Therefore, a mouthwash formulation from natural ingredients was developed. The potential plant for natural mouthwash is the honje laka flower (Etlingera hemisphaerica (Blume) R.M.Sm.) which contains flavonoids, polyphenols, quinones, monoterpenoids, and sesquiterpenoids as antibacterial. This study aims to determine the potential of honje laka flower extract in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans and as an ingredient in mouthwash. The procedure of this research started from the extraction of honje laka flower using 96% ethanol solvent followed by phytochemical screening test and antimicrobial test with a well diffusion method. The concentration of honje laka flower extract used for MIC test were 5%, 10%, and 15%. Evaluation of honje laka extract mouthwash preparations were organoleptic test, pH test, centrifugation test, cycling test, and bacterial inhibition zone test. The results showed the ethanol extract of honje laka flowers has activity against S. mutans with a MIC at a concentration of 5% and inhibition zone at 9.22±0.115 mm, while the mouthwash formula at a concentration of 15% has an inhibitory zone at 9.35±0.02 mm. As a conclusion, ethanol extract from honje laka flower can be used as a mouthwash and can inhibit the activity of S. mutans.

Mouthwash is a liquid, aqueous composition that is primarily used to treat oral conditions, as well as maintain oral health. The purpose of this study was to prove the antibacterial efficacy of citronella essential oil against Streptococcus mutans bacteria made in mouthwash formulations. Citronella essential oil was analyzed using GC-MS and then formulated into a mouthwash with concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% at cold temperatures (2-8°C) and room temperature (20-25°C).The test results were evaluated, and analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey. The GC-MS results showed that 3 main compounds were detected, namely Citronellol (11.69%), Geraniol (15.59%), and Citronellal (24.57%). The mouthwash formulation did not show any organoleptic change in physical preparation, was homogeneous, had a pH range of 4.91-5.18 at cold temperature and pH 5.02-5.23 at room temperature, had a viscosity consistency that met the standard of 0.8 -1 at cold temperature and room temperature, and no separation was found, such as the presence of precipitate in each treatment. Formula 3 is considered to have medium inhibition compared to formulas 1 and 2 with an average inhibition power at cold temperature formula 6.73 while at room temperature formula 7.35. Briefly, the formulation is stable both at cold temperature (2-8°C) and room temperature (20-25°C) with moderate inhibition at a concentration of 4.5%.

The formation of dental caries results from the activity of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. One of the efforts to prevent dental caries is using toothpaste containing antibacterial compounds such as hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-clove oil. This study aims to synthesize and characterize hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-cloves oil as an antibacterial that causes dental caries. In this study, physical properties were tested, namely, particle size with PSA, spreadability, stickiness, homogeneity, and chemical properties tested in functional groups with FTIR, pH, and antibacterial activity with the disc diffusion method. This study used 2% hydroxyapatite, ten ppm nanosilver, tween 80, xanthan gum, 70% sorbitol, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium saccharin, calcium carbonate, peppermint, distilled water, clove oil with variations in the addition of concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. The synthesis results produced a toothpaste preparation made from hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-clove oil, as evidenced by the results of FTIR characterization showing the presence of OH-, CO32-, PO43-, C-H, C-O, and C=O functional groups. PSA results show hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-clove oil has an average size of 4464 nm which is not included in the nanoparticle category (<100 nm). The toothpaste spreadability test resulted in a spread diameter of 5-6 cm, which met the requirements for paste spreadability (5-7 cm), while the adhesion test resulted in adhesion (7-12 seconds) which has not met the ideal requirements (1-6 seconds). The pH measurement resulted in a toothpaste pH of 8.8-9.0 per SNI (4.5-10.5). The homogeneity test of the toothpaste has met the requirements according to SNI, namely the absence of air bubbles, clumps, and separated particles. The antibacterial activity test showed that the hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-clove oil toothpaste formulation was able to inhibit the growth of S.mutans bacteria with the highest inhibition diameter in the variation of adding 4% concentration of clove oil, namely 14.99 mm with normally distributed data (p>0.05). One Way ANOVA statistical analysis showed that the treatment variation had a significantly different effect (p<0.05). These results indicate that adding clove oil into the formulation of hydroxyapatite-nanosilver-clove oil toothpaste can affect its chemical, physical, and antibacterial activity.
