Formulas for the Analysis of the Surface SFG Spectrum and Transformation Coefficients of Cartesian SFG Tensor Components

Abstract: Comprehensive expressions have been presented to facilitate the analysis of the surface sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectrum. The electric field components of the SFG beam for a given experimental setup have been related via appropriately defined Fresnel coefficients to the nonlinear source polarization, which in turn has been related to the electric fields of exciting visible and infrared beams through the macroscopic SFG susceptibility tensor. The coefficients of transformation have been given to relate t… Show more

“…By mathematically transforming the hyperpolarizability elements of the SS and the AS of the methyl group of MSA from molecular coordinates to the laboratory coordinate system via Euler angle rotations, it has been shown previously that the SF response from the SS and the AS of CH modes from methyl groups of C 3v symmetry are of opposite phase. 36 39,40 That is what is observed here.…”

“…We observed three dips in the ER condition rather than peaks. 29 This difference in φ results from both the change in the Fresnel coeffcients 35,36 and the contribution of the gold/CaF2 interface to χ NR (2) . 24 We normalized this spectrum by that for a GaAs surface; the susceptibility of the GaAs surface is independent of the wavelength in the region studied and we hence can measure the IR envelope.…”

“…[22][23][24][25] The VSF spectra were obtained for water surfaces at an atmospheric pressure of ~1 atm and at ~ 21° C. HPLC grade water or Nanopure water (18 MÜ) was utilized in these studies. The laser system [26] …”
