Formulation and evaluation of chitosan films containing sparfloxacin for the treatment of periodontitis

Abstract: In the present study an attempt has been made to formulate and evaluate a sustained release periodontal film of Sparfloxacin with biodegradable, cost effective polymer Chitosan. The objective of the study was to formulate intra-pocket periodontal films, which could be easily placed into the periodontal pocket, and thus be capable of delivering therapeutic concentrations of drug. Sparfloxacin is an antibiotic, showing wide spectrum antibacterial activity against a number of periodontal pathogens. Hence Sparflox… Show more

“…Sparfloxacin-loaded chitosan-based film was also proposed as an antimicrobial device for the treatment of periodontal diseases [ 74 ]. In this case, the film preparation was carried out using chitosan alone or in combination with various co-polymers, i.e., hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and Eudragit RL100.…”

“…Due to its interesting properties, CS is extensively used in biomedical applications as a matrix for drug encapsulation and controlled release [ 7 , 8 ], but also as an antimicrobial agent, alone or with other natural and synthetic polymers [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. CS is also known to have antimicrobial activity against periodontal pathogens ( Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans ) [ 13 , 14 ] and was used with good results for periodontal treatment in clinical trials [ 15 , 16 ], as well as a film matrix for the periodontal delivery of different drugs, such as tetracycline [ 17 ], ciprofloxacin and diclofenac [ 18 ], lincomycin [ 19 ], metronidazole [ 20 ], risedronate [ 21 ], metformin [ 22 ] or sparfloxacin [ 23 ].…”
