Objective: Emulgel technique has attempts for preparation of itraconazole (ITZ) transdermal patches of reservoir type using a single-phase system with different polymers of Carbopol 934 and Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC). Methods: The transdermal patches were prepared by using eudragit L30 as a polymer and propylene glycol (PG) as plasticizer has been made to predict the mechanism of drug release and absorption based on the order of release. The optimized transdermal patches were characterised as surface morphology, pH, viscosity, spreadability, folding endurance, drug permeation, assay, in vitro dissolution and stability for 3 mo. Results: The result of the study showed that the transdermal patches prepared with eudragit (8 %) showed 96.11±3.17 % drug release in 24 h and the optimised formulation F8, which had the highest concentration of span 20 and tween 20, displayed the highest percentage of drug penetration. The drug release kinetics was studied, including the Baker-Lonsdale model with in vitro drug permeation data was found that release from non-spherical matrices, the first-order model with non-fickian diffusion. Conclusion: ITZ administered transdermally might be avoided the number of drawbacks associated with oral delivery and perhaps maintain a relatively constant plasma level during a lengthy course of treatment.

Background: Emulgel combines the qualities of an emulsion with those of a gel. In order to create an emulgel w/o or o/w, emulsions have to be formulated, which are then com-bined with a gelling agent, resulting in a dual-control drug release. Celecoxib exhibits analge-sic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities and is used to treat osteoarthritis, severe pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and other medical conditions. Methods: Celecoxib Emulgel was developed and evaluated by using natural oil and carbopol-940 as a gelling agent in different concentrations. The screening of various oils, co-surfactants and surfactants was performed to determine the solubility. The essential oils (eucalyptus oil and turpentine oil) were used as penetration modifiers. Studies on compatibility with polymers have been conducted, and the results indicate that there should be no physical or chemical interactions between the polymers and the drug substance. For the preparation of emulgel, various emulsions were prepared with Smix (cosurfactant and surfactant) ratios (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1). The selection of a gelling agent was done by incorporating the selected emulsion system ratio of 1:1 with the combinations of polymers carbapol 940, carbapol 934, and HPMC (0:1:0, 0:0.5:1, 0:0:3, 0.5:0:1, 1:0:0) gel base to make a homogenous emulgel. Results: The emulgel was examined visually to see if it had any phase behaviour, feel, spread-ability, and grittiness by applying its thin layer to a slide. Then, all six formulations of emulgel were prepared with the selected gelling agent. All emulgels were evaluated for pH, physical properties (consistency, homogeneity, colour, texture), drug content, spreadability, extrudabil-ity, swelling index, viscosity, stability and centrifugation. A Franz diffusion cell and an egg membrane were used to perform in-vitro drug release. Conclusion: Among all prepared formulations, EG1 had a better release, higher viscosity, higher drug content, and a higher swelling index than the others. The formulation EG1 showed higher drug release (91.25%) within 8 hours.

Background: During the development of the new formulations, the hydrophobic drugs face many problems leading to poor water solubility and problems related to bioavailability. Topical drug delivery is a popular and unique process that directs the action of various drugs on the skin for the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases and disorders such as urticaria, inflammation, rheumatism, etc. This topical release system is usually used to escape the first-pass metabolism. An emulgel is a superior formulation with combined advantages of both an emulsion and agel. Gel preparations normally offer earlier drug release than other predictable ointments and creams. Objective: The main aim of this review is to deal with the problems associated with the delivery of hydrophobic drugs and to tackle these problems using an emulgel formulation. Emulgel mainly provides better stability, prolonged local contact, controlled release of drugs with short half-life, and better loading capacity. Methods: The review was extracted from the searches performed in PubMed, Google Patents, Medline, and Google Scholars, etc. Data from these searches were collected and evaluated to get information about the available literature on the emulgel formulation. The literature obtained was studied thoroughly as per the requirement of the objective of this review. Results: The details of the emulgel formulation, the advantages and disadvantages associated with it, and the methods for characterization of the formulation are compiled here in this review. Along with this, some reported patents have also been included in this review to conclude the future of emulgel formulation in topical drug delivery. Conclusion: Emulgel is becoming very popular as a drug delivery system to deliver many antifungal, analgesics, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory drugs, and a number of cosmetics with a wide scope to be explored further. This review article is motivated by the formulation, characterization, patents, and biological activities of emulgel formulation.
