Summary The aim of the article was to obtain maximum information about plant mucilage, its sources and applications in the pharmaceutical industry. This study focuses on the scientific articles and books available in Internet resources and college library that deal with the sources, applications, extraction and isolation of plant mucilage. Mucilage is obtained mainly from plant sources and can be isolated easily. Due to the low cost, easy availability, non-toxicity, non-irritancy, and biocompatibility, mucilage is of great demand in the field of pharmaceuticals. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L., Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Abelmoschus esculentus L, Plantago ovata Forssk. and Aloe barbadensis L. are some common sources of mucilage. The isolation methods vary depending on the part of the plant where mucilage is present. It is commonly used as gelling agent, suspending agent, binder, and disintegrant. Since it is hydrophilic in nature, chances of deterioration are higher. In this review, different mucilage sources and their isolation methods are discussed in detail. Mucilage is used as excipient in many formulations of tablets, suspensions, gels, etc. The study explores the potential of plant mucilage as an excipient in pharmaceutical formulations. The biodegradable and biocompatible properties of this inexpensive excipient make it more favourable for the newer formulation development.

Objective: The rationale of the current work was to formulate and evaluate orodispersible tablets by direct compression technique with a vision to augment patient compliance and rapid onset of action.Methods: Nine orodispersible formulations of propranolol were formulated by direct compression method using sodium starch glycolate, crospovidone and croscarmellose sodium as the super disintegrants. The prepared formulations were evaluated for wetting time, drug content, in vitro disintegration time, dispersion time, dissolution time and also projected to kinetic treatment to know the pattern of drug release. Further, the discovered promising formulation was subjected to stability studies. Conclusion:Orodispersible tablets of propranolol hydrochloride were formulated successfully by employing direct compression technique. From the investigation, it can be reasonably concluded that F9 batch orodispersible tablets of propranolol with 6 mg of crospovidone exhibited maximum cumulative drug release in 60 s.

Bimodal Release Two-In-One Clonazepam Matrix Lozenge Tablets for Managing Anxiety-Related Disorders: Formulation, Optimization and In Vivo Evaluation

Clonazepam (CLZ), an antipsychotic drug reported for its efficiency in managing anxiety-related disorders, is being marketed only as conventional tablets. Some patients have abstention to swallow the conventional tablets; therefore, the proposed study was aimed at developing a buccal lozenge tablet by direct compression of two types of optimized granules. Conazepam’s water solubility was first enhanced by a solid dispersion technique for a fast and better dissolution of type 1 granules, while the impact of gelling polymers was investigated on controlled-release type 2 granules. The optimized formulae met the acceptable pharmacopeial limits for tablets’ evaluation. A differential scanning calorimetry study revealed the compatibility between the drug and used excipients. All formulae gave a burst release of CLZ in the first hour of investigation, followed by a sustained release over 24 h. The formula that showed the highest prolonged in vitro release (99.0 + 0.1%), following the Higuchi diffusion model (R2 = 0.99), was then selected for further study. The formula succeeded in controlling the induced stress in a rat model with a significant impact on the behavioral tests throughout the experiment. The results were further confirmed by a pharmacokinetic study that showed a significant increase in Cmax, Tmax, and AUC (1.5, 2, and 3.9 folds), respectively, compared to oral suspension. The newly proposed delivery system has proven a better efficacy with a reduced dosing frequency.
