“…Elemental analyses (C, H) were performed with a Heraeus Elemental Analyser, and sulphur was analysed ac cording to the method of Schöniger [55], DSC and TG measurements were obtained using a 910 Differential Scanning Calorimeter, a 951 Thermogravimetric Analyser, and a Thermal Analyst 2100 for data analyses.…”

“…The total carbohydrate and protein contents of the polysaccharides were respectively determined by the phenol-H 2 SO 4 method, using glucose as a standard, 19) and by the Lowry method, 20) using a commercial assay kit (DC Protein assay kit, Bio-Rad, USA). The sulfur content of the polysaccharides was determined by the BaCl 2 gelatin method, using K 2 SO 4 as a standard after hydrolyzing the polysaccharides in 0.5 M HCl at 105 C for 5 h. 21) The degree of substitution (DS) was calculated from the sulfur content on the basis of Schoniger's formula: 22) DS ¼ 1:62 Â S%=ð32{1:02 Â S%Þ. The FT-IR spectra (KBr disc) of the polysaccharides were recorded by using a Tensor 27 spectrophotometer (Bruker, Germany).…”

“…The content of Cl was determined according to the Schöniger flask method (Schöniger, 1955). The analyzed substance (2-4 mg) was wrapped in filter paper placed in a Pt grid and hanged up to the cork of the flask.…”
