Fostering responsible research with genome editing technologies: a European perspective

Abstract: In this consensus paper resulting from a meeting that involved representatives from more than 20 European partners, we recommend the foundation of an expert group (European Steering Committee) to assess the potential benefits and draw-backs of genome editing (off-targets, mosaicisms, etc.), and to design risk matrices and scenarios for a responsible use of this promising technology. In addition, this European steering committee will contribute in promoting an open debate on societal aspects prior to a translat… Show more

“…National and international life sciences communities recognize the need for broader conversations about responsibility as well (c.f., The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine [NASEM], 2016; Chneiweiss et al, 2017). Importantly, and as Hartley et al (2016) have noted, a much broader community of people, organizations, experts, and interest groups will need to be involved in resolving questions like the above when approaching new and emerging gene-editing techniques through RRI.…”

“…Some research groups and institutes do indeed seek to engage people in their locality on their genome editing research. The need for a responsible innovation approach to genome editing has been recognised by research scientists, including the setting up of a European Steering Committee to address these issues (Chneiweiss et al 2017). In the UK, lay members are appointed to some scientific and ethical advisory committees, such as in the field of animal research, both at national and local level, where genome editing developments may be considered.…”

“…Possible adverse long-term effects of artificial genetic modifications can be attributed to this category as well. With regard to genome editing the fairly unpredictable long-term effects of so called gene drives are just one example (Champer et al, 2016, p. 156–57; Chneiweiss et al, 2017, p. 712).…”
