Founding transdisciplinary knowledge production in critical realism: implications and benefits

Abstract: This article explains the implications and benefits of founding transdisciplinary collaborations of knowledge production in critical realism. We call such equal partnerships of researchers and practitioners knowledge alliances. Drawing on the distinction between the referent to which we refer (the object that our research is about) and our references (our research about this object), we show that practitioners can contribute to the process of knowledge production by providing access to referents and producing … Show more

“…Much of his work was written in exceedingly difficult language. This book, however, makes it accessible to those who have the most to gain from it: anyone trying to make the world a better place.Critical realism is therefore well‐suited as an underlabourer or philosophical enabler of research which draws collaboratively on multiple knowledge forms in an inclusive and generative manner, and which seeks to bring about radical societal change towards the flourishing of all beings (Bhaskar, 2010; Parker, 2010; Price, 2014), that is, as an underlabourer for transdisciplinary research (Stigendal & Novy, 2018). This is discussed further below in analysing the examples of critical realist tools used in social‐ecological research (Table 2).…”
