Four new species of Lorryia (Acari: Tydeidae) associated with Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) in Brazil

Abstract: Lorryia (Tydeinae) species are commonly found in surveys of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) in Brazil, although only Lorryia formosa (Cooreman, 1958) has been formally reported from this host. In this study, we described Lorryia parvireticuli sp. nov., L. amazonensis sp. nov., L. fortistriata sp. nov., and L. virga sp. nov., associated with rubber trees from Brazil.

“…This criterion was also rejected by Baker (1968: 986) who stated that the presence of a single claw was a "misinterpretation". In interpretation 2, the single specimen of Lorryia superba is supposed to be an abnormal individual (Kaźmierski, 1998: 301; Kaźmierski andSikora, 2008: 88) or is considered as such (Mondin et al, 2016: 474; Kaźmierski et al, 2018. The presence of a single claw was observed at most on 4 legs of the same mite which seems hardly compatible with the single claw noticed on all the legs, thus eight times, of L. superba.…”

“…Lastly, it is not recommended to base a genus with dozens of species on a unique specimen, in addition enigmatic and not available. Therefore, the synonymy Lorryia-Brachytydeus made by Akbari et al (2015) and Mondin et al (2016) is not accepted. The species assigned to the genus Lorryia and described after the world catalog of Silva et al (2016a) (namely L. amazonensis, L. buceroincerta, L. columbina, L. fortistriata, L. lusciniella, L. meliponarum, L. parvireticuli, L. pseudoplacita, L. sibiriensis, L. speciosa, L. tuttii, L. virga) are transferred to Brachytydeus.…”

“…In Russia, it was recorded in European part (Kuznetsov and Petrov 1984). Mondin et al (2016) consider L. reticulata as suspected junior synonym of L. superba (type species of Lorryia) and Kaźmierski et al (2018) consider L. reticulata as a junior synonym of L. superba. However, described the history of L. superba and noted that type specimen of this species is lost.…”
