Fractal Characteristic Evolution of Coastal Settlement Land Use: A Case of Xiamen, China

Abstract: Coastal settlements in urban areas show certain degrees of spatial complexity. Understanding the evolution law of fractal settlements is practically important for marine engineering and urban planning. In this paper, we investigate the fractal evolution of coastal settlement land use based on fractal theory. The fractal dimensions of the land uses for three typically coastal settlements in Xiamen city, China, are obtained to quantify their spatial complexity. The results reveal the fractal characteristics and … Show more

“…According to Rudianto, Sisilo et al (2016) an indispensable strategy in the development of coastal areas is the integration of coastal ecosystems, especially for the existence of mangrove forests, coral reefs, and other components with the aim of minimizing the impact of more severe damage in the future. Coastal settlements are part of coastal villages in urban areas that tend to have diverse characteristics (Jevric and Romanovich, 2016;Liang, Liu et al, 2017;Matsuba and Namatame, 2003;Roy, 2005;Yu and Zhao, 2021). Starting from its physical characteristics such as environmental conditions and disasters to the characteristics of the community.…”

“…Fractal theory is a significant method to measure the complex characteristics of regional spatial morphology [36]. This paper uses the morphological dimension, the spatial structure stability index, and the standard deviation ellipse to study the polycentric circle structure in the YRD region.…”

“…Yet theoretically, the power-law distribution of component sizes is only one of the properties of a fractal system, while the dynamic spatial configuration of the components, their growth path, and the way they fill the available space are important determinants as well. Yu and Zhao [55] address this measurement challenge by employing nonlinear least-squares regression to estimate the rate of change of fractal dimension which can vary across different urban growth contexts.…”
