An improved interfacial bonding model was proposed from potential function point of view to investigate interfacial interactions in polycrystalline materials. It characterizes both attractive and repulsive interfacial interactions and can be applied to model different material interfaces. The path dependence of work-of-separation study indicates that the transformation of separation work is smooth in normal and tangential direction and the proposed model guarantees the consistency of the cohesive constitutive model. The improved interfacial bonding model was verified through a simple compression test in a standard hexagonal structure. The error between analytical solutions and numerical results from the proposed model is reasonable in linear elastic region. Ultimately, we investigated the mechanical behavior of extrafibrillar matrix in bone and the simulation results agreed well with experimental observations of bone fracture.

Damage growth in composites involves complex and progressive failure modes. Current computational tools are incapable of predicting failure in composite materials mainly due to their mathematical structure. However, peridynamic theory removes these obstacles by taking into account nonlocal interactions between material points. This study presents an application of peridynamic theory to predict how damage propagates in fiber-reinforced composite materials subjected to mechanical and thermal loading conditions.

In this paper, interface crack initiation at V-notches along adhesive in bonded Polycarbonate (PC) and Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) subjected to mixed-mode loading conditions was investigated based on a combined experimental, finite element and matched asymptotic analysis. The V-notch specimens with an adhesive interface starting from its tip made at different notch angles were tested under threepoint bending conditions. The experimental observations show that the specimens mainly fail by cracks along the interface. Also, the load at the crack initiation increases when the notch angle increases. The computational results are then used to explain and to correlate with the experimental data. A two-fold criterion developed by Leguillon (Eur J Mech A/Solids 21:61-72 2002) that requires a simultaneous satisfaction of both Griffith energy and stress conditions for the crack initiation at a notch in the specimen made of a homogeneous brittle material is first extended for
