The development of proxy caching is essential in the area of video‐on‐demand (VoD) to meet users' expectations. VoD requires high bandwidth and creates high traffic due to the nature of media. Many researchers have developed proxy caching models to reduce bandwidth consumption and traffic. Proxy caching keeps part of a media object to meet the viewing expectations of users without delay and provides interactive playback. If the caching is done continuously, the entire cache space will be exhausted at one stage. Hence, the proxy server must apply cache replacement policies to replace existing objects and allocate the cache space for the incoming objects. Researchers have developed many cache replacement policies by considering several parameters, such as recency, access frequency, cost of retrieval, and size of the object. In this paper, the Weighted‐Rank Cache replacement Policy (WRCP) is proposed. This policy uses such parameters as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio and such functions as size and cost of retrieval. The WRCP applies our previously developed proxy caching model, Hot‐Point Proxy, at four levels of replacement, depending on the cache requirement. Simulation results show that the WRCP outperforms our earlier model, the Dual Cache Replacement Policy.

Video streaming applications have implementation issues when the transmission rate is much less than the video playback rate. Caching the beginning part of the video in large storage device before playing is a common solution.In this paper, we propose a bandwidth allocation scheme on video content distribution servers. This algorithm is aim to control the server sending rate with efficient bandwidth resource allocation. In order to reduce the impact of network rate jitter, we present a client cache scheme considering the average receiving rate. On servers, on-line clients are grouped into three queues based on different serving stages: playing, downloading or waiting to play. The sending rate is allocated to each client dynamically. Clients who are watching video have the highest priority. For the waiting clients, a weighted bandwidth allocation approach is presented to minimize users' waiting time. The simulation results show that the proposed bandwidth allocation scheme can achieve a high performance.

Abstract-This paper describes and analyzes JPIP-W, an innovative proposal for the interactive transmission of JPEG2000 images on the Internet. JPIP-W is an extension of JPIP, the current JPEG protocol proposed for interactive JPEG2000 image browsing. One of the JPIP characteristics of greatest interest is its ability to use the Web for retrieving images. However, JPIP is unable to exploit the large infrastructure of today's Web caching systems (proxies), used to reduce response time and network traffic. To overcome this drawback, JPIP-W defines a new server-client interaction consisting of splitting JPEG2000 images into data blocks that can be cached by the proxies. These blocks can be shared among several clients, allowing fast recovery of some portions of the images. Experimental results demonstrate that JPIP-W significantly reduces JPIP retrieving times.Index Terms-JPEG2000, JPIP, progressive image transmission, remote browsing of images, web caching.
