Blast and fragmentation of a scaled down model of standard artillery shell is investigated experimentally and numerically. Simple experimental techniques are employed in this study to measure the fragments' velocity, mass and spatial distribution. Fragments of mass ranging from tens of milligram(s) to 6.4 grams are produced with velocities ranging from 960 to 1555 m/s. The cylindrical part of the shell has larger contribution among high velocity fragments ~1369-1555m/s than the conical and rear parts due to higher charge to mass (C/M) ratio. Overpressure of 44.2psi (304.7kPa) is measured at stand-off distance of 0.550m. The numerical simulation of fragmentation is carried out using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) solver available in ANSYS AUTODYN. A coupled Euler-ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) approach is used to simulate the shell blast propagation in the surrounding air. A good agreement is achieved between the simulation and experimental results. The investigation can help in the development of protective configurations against the damaging effects of blast and fragmentation.

In this paper, a novel algorithm is presented for warhead recognition in the defense of ballistic missiles. The range profiles from the warheads of interest in typical illumination directions form a dataset. First, each range profile in the dataset is compared to the range profile of the target under observation, and the most similar range profile is found. Then, the observed target is considered as a warhead if the deviation of its range profile from the most similar range profile is less than or equal to a threshold. The threshold is chosen such that the detection rate is a constant. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Since the threshold is automatically calculated according to the detection rate, this algorithm has a larger applicability than the current methods based on range-profile matching.

High pressure, high-temperature events need to be quantified experimentally. Where fragmentation occurs, i.e. against personal protective equipment, there is a requirement for both a reliable and repeatable measurement of numerous experimental metrics. Typically, the most critical is calculating the energy absorbed by the target material, to characterize target performance. This is achieved by detonating a device and capturing a proportion of the fragmentation in a suitable material that can achieve successful recovery of all fragmentation produced. Therefore, allowing the estimation of the target's response using the depth of penetration within the capture material which allows the calculation of energy absorption. The current standardized fragmentation capture material used within the UK is known as strawboard. Although effective, this material is both expensive and limited in its availability. This study explores the classification of strawboard to provide a suitable baseline to compare against medium density fibreboard (MDF) and flooring underlay, which represent two more economically friendly alternatives on the openmarket. It was found that the uniformity of response for the MDF material was better than that of strawboard, due to its reproducibility between batches and velocity ranges. To further explore this phenomena, high explosive trials were conducted, further demonstrating MDF to be a viable, reliable and cheaper alternative.
