Frailty and quality of life among older people with and without a cancer diagnosis: Findings from TOPICS-MDS

Abstract: BackgroundThe number of older cancer patients is rising. Especially in older people, treatment considerations should balance the impact of disease and treatment on quality of life (QOL) and survival. How a cancer diagnosis in older people interacts with concomitant frailty to impact on QOL is largely unknown. We aimed to determine the association between frailty and QOL among community-dwelling older people aged 65 years or above with and without a cancer diagnosis cross-sectionally and at 12 months follow-up.… Show more

“…As a consequence, older patients are less willing to accept severe toxicity and reduced HRQOL. In non-fit older patients with cancer this may complicate treatment decisions even more because HRQOL decreases with increased frailty [13].…”

A total of 26 unique FSTs were identified after full‐text evaluation 19–47 . A flow chart on the literature search and reasons for exclusion can be found in the Fig.…”

“…A few other studies have investigated how frail older cancer patients perceive their QoL, and the findings are in line with our results. Frail patients seem to be at a considerable disadvantage throughout the disease trajectory, reporting a substantial symptom burden and poor functioning compared to non-frail patients [273][274][275][276][277]. We used QLQ-C30 for our assessments, and although this is generally regarded as an excellent QoL questionnaire, it is debatable whether it captures how the patients' health problems actually affect their quality of life in a broader sense.…”
