Freeform-Optimized Shapes for Natural-Convection Cooling

Abstract: This paper presents numerical and experimental results for natural-convection cooling of freeform-optimized shapes. Stateof-the-art 3D-printing technologies are utilized to fabricate innovative heat sink designs. Biomimicry was used to develop heat sink shapes based on brain coral. CFD-optimized designs were systematically analysed altering the number and size of air inlet holes to improve airflow circulation. Selectively laser-sintered polyamide heat sinks were used for experimental airflow testing, whereas s… Show more

“…After the successful results of this study, the authors aim to additively manufacture a complete passive hybrid device mitigating contact thermal resistance with the external heat sink as well. A natural convection air-cooled condenser to reject the heat into the ambient environment as a single device is envisioned [29]. Eliminating a forced air/water cooling system results in cost savings of having no fan/pump, no fan/pump housing nor controller, no electrical connections for its installation and no energy consumption.…”

“…Powder bed fusion technologies show potential for fabricating a vast number of components requiring good mechanical and thermal properties, such as heat sinks and injection-moulding inserts, as they can process parts of high relative density. Understanding porosity formation aids in improving parts' quality and decreasing the limiting effect these defects can have when parts are applied in industry [20][21][22]. The application of heat treatment on AlSi10Mg samples can reduce density due to the exposure to high temperatures.…”

“…To overcome these restrictions and manufacture the complex shape heat sink, several research studies start using the AM method as an alternative option to conventional manufacturing methods to fabricate the passive [29] and active heat sink [24], [27], and [30]. [29] have used a Bioinspired (Biomimicry) design approach to design their heat sink based on the shape from brain coral. Moreover, they implemented the optimization process by numerical computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method.…”
