Frequency Comb Generation Using a CMOS Compatible SiP DD-MZM for Flexible Networks

Abstract: On-chip frequency comb generation is a promising solution for seeding a chip-scale optical transmitter for both Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing. We demonstrate flexible frequency comb generation using a silicon photonic dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator fabricated on a CMOS-compatible process. Our on-chip comb has five lines spaced at 20 GHz, with a high tone-to-noise ratio of about 40 dB after one stage optical amplification. Our back-to-back trans… Show more

“…An MZM-based optical frequency comb generator was recently demonstrated on a silicon chip [134]. Using this integrated comb, an 800 Gb/s superchannel (five carriers with 20-GBaud DP-QAM-16) was achieved, indicating a promising source solution for few-carrier superchannel transmitters.…”

“…Chip-scale comb sources have been used in a variety of WDM transmission experiments, relying on different comb generation approaches and covering a wide range of data rates, channel counts, and line spacings [5][6][7][8][9][10][14][15][16][17][18][19]. A particularly promising option to generate frequency combs in chip-scale devices relies on Kerr comb generation in micro-ring resonators [27].…”

“…Combs generated in linear modulators have since been used in different configurations and applications for e.g. in Mach-Zehnder modulators(MZM) [17], cascaded MZM with phase modulators [8], dual-drive MZM [18], dual-parallel MZM configurations [19] etc.…”
