Abstract: Purpose To determine the frequency of cataract surgery in Germany and to evaluate its impact on visual function in an adult population. Methods The population-based Gutenberg Health Study was conducted in Germany with its baseline examination between 2007 and 2012 and a 5-year follow-up examiantion. “…Phakic eyes were defined according to an algorithm of Scheimpflug images as described earlier. 34 The anterior chamber angle (ACA) width was automatically measured using the integrated software of the Scheimpflug imaging device (Pentacam, version 1.20r41; Oculus), as reported before. 35 Scheimpflug images only with high quality (Pentacam quality status 0 or 1) were included.…”

“…At the other end of the age spectrum, centenarians have a lower-than-expected incidence of ARC (160,161). Although it might be expected that PTM would be progressive and similar in both lenses, ARC is not always bilateral (162)(163)(164)(165), and many factors play a role in the loss of transparency (165,166). It is important to acknowledge that life span and aging are not necessarily the same even for monozygotic human twins (167)(168)(169), as lifestyle is a potential modifier (170)(171)(172).…”
