“…Barnum's work, then, evolved into what became 100 years later the ethical, professional, and twoway "public relations" model firmly rooted in postwar American business, a perspective that Brown (2003, p. 230) called the "Big Bang Barnum concept. " Hoy et al (2007) found variations of these approaches in their examina-tion of history chapters in 11 public relations textbooks. They attributed this tendency to Bernays whom, they argued, had employed a model of progressive history in an attempt to cleanse the image of public relations, despite the fact that their citation analysis of those texts revealed a notable absence of references to Bernays.…”

“…US textbooks by Grunig and Hunt (1984) and Cutlip and Center (1952) (later Cutlip, Center and Broom that appeared in multiple editions) have proved influential in the conceptualisation of the development of PR across the globe and the development of a common historical discourse rationalising the emergence of the field (L’Etang, 2015a). It is worth noting in particular the work of Hoy et al who have logged from quantitative as well as qualitative perspective practices within PR and PR histories in relation to historical research in the field, an approach that helps to build up patterns of influence within the PR historical subfield (see, for example, Hoy et al, 2007; Wehmeier et al, 2009). Their work has aimed to take a comparative analytical approach to uncover discursive constructions of historical evidence.…”

“…As a consequence, we can observe a growing interest in the basic philosophies and purpose of the field. Several overview articles have appeared on the historiography of PR, which examine the frameworks, approaches, and theories of PR's origins and development (Hoy, Raaz, & Wehmeier, 2007;Gower, 2008;L'Etang, 2008;Pearson, 2009;Raaz & Wehmeier, 2011;Vos, 2011;Watson, 2015b). However, PR scholars have remained more interested in education than theory (Bowen, 2009;Wright, 2011).…”
