From Idea to Reality: Extensive and Executable Modeling Language for Mobile Learning Games

Abstract: Mobile Learning Games (MLGs) show great potential for education, especially in fields that deal with outdoor learning activities such as archaeology or botany. However, the number of MLGs currently used remains insignificant. This is partly due to the fact that the current authoring tools are based on modeling languages that only allow creating very specific and rigid types of MLGs. In this paper, we therefore propose an extensive modeling language for MLGs. This model was designed, with the help of botanical … Show more

“…This method can easily be applied to other existing services such as speech recognition or Augmented Reality to create domain specific MLG activities without compromising the security, robustness and genericity of the authoring tool. In the case of MOGGLE, we used a highly modular and adaptable MLG model, described in previous work [10], and the document-oriented database MongoDB that offers a high-level performance on a large number of documents.…”

“…These authoring tools provide several game mechanics that use mobility for learning, but not collaboration. It is also hard to extract game mechanics from existing MOCOGAs because there are very few [7], [8] and their game scenarios are specific to their educational goals and context.…”

“…2. Describing a conceptual model for botanical MLG scenarios: it offers high-level concepts, similar to the natural concepts used by teachers, and is rich enough to adapt to various types of MLGs [7]. Without going into detail, the model formalizes a MLG as a series of SituatedGameUnits each related to a POI (Point Of Interest), i.e.…”
