From Mockups to User Interface Models: An Extensible Model Driven Approach

Abstract: Sketching web applications with mockup tools is a common practice that improves the process of elicitation and validation of requirements in web applications. However, mockups are used as a "quick and dirty" way of gathering requirements, thus discarded before development. As a consequence, concepts captured in them are usually lost in the manual transformation between mockups and the final user interface. In this paper we present a model-driven approach that overcomes this problem by importing mockups and the… Show more

“…H1 Figure 14A shows the measured WebApp development times, with time, our = 63.04 minutes and time,Ebase = 95. 17 minutes. The null hypothesis is time, our − time,Ebase = 0, that is, there is no significant difference between the 2 WebApp development times.…”

“…Thus, we discarded research prototypes (not stable enough for the average EU participants 14,23 ), tools relying on textual programming paradigms, 26,34 and those not supporting the generation of data-driven WebApps. 16,17 As a result of this selection process, we have chosen Ebase Xi since it is the one guaranteeing the best trade-off between usability and stability.…”

“…Finally, after a series of transformations, developers achieve their executable prototype. The mockup-based approaches presented in [31] and [9] merely generate code implementing the UI skeleton, while the rest of the application needs to be manually coded.…”

“…Another interesting idea is the model-driven way of importing user interface mockups into the real development process described in [11]. The implementation of this idea into our intended toolchain would really be nice to have.…”
