From Music to Medicine: Are Pianists at an Advantage When Learning Surgical Skills?

Abstract: Background: The acquisition of procedural competence is of vital importance in the training of physicians. It has been observed that medical students with extensive musical backgrounds often learn surgical techniques more rapidly than other students, raising the question of motor skill transfer from one area to another. Objective: It is the aim of this project to explore whether musicians can learn and perform surgical skills more rapidly than non-musicians. This study explores the claims that musicians’ profi… Show more

“…Potential determinants of hospital length of stay include how long the patient has been in the hospital before experimental day 1 (Start Date), whether patient diagnostic procedure is from procedures with historical readmission risk exceeding 17% (High Risk), whether decisions are CDS-assisted, the interaction of the latter two dummies, and patient aversion to being discharged (Reluctant). Decisions on when to discharge a patient may also be affected by individual decision-maker characteristics captured in exceeding median GPA (proficiency), musical training [ 20 ], athletic training [ 21 ], risk aversion [ 22 ] and gender [ 23 ]. Table 1 reports least squares estimates of the determinants of length of stay, for model specifications with and without demographic covariates.…”

“…In fact, other activities that require dexterity in both the dominant and nondominant hand may be more beneficial to a surgeon than drawing. Playing Baroque keyboard music requires careful coordination and small-muscle dexterity in both hands and may offer benefits far beyond those gained from visual inputs of drawing 11 …”

“…In a practical example of skill acquisition, participants with piano expertise or no expertise learned to complete surgical knots and procedures. Pianists compared to non-musicians received higher scores on the standardized rating system, the Objective Structures Assessment of Technical Skills [ 32 ].…”
